Three years old

The big boy is three years old. It's hard to believe it's been almost three years since Tristan came into my life. He's such a great dog and I'm so lucky to have him.

BH here we went

Aargh. No BH for us. We did both better and worst than expected. The better part was that Tristan heeled well off leash and stayed with me through the whole routine. The worst part was that I was totally inexperienced at doing a routine and misread when I was supposed to look to the judge for starting and stopping the exercises. The judge motioned me onto the field and I thought he meant for me to start the heeling on leash routine. I was supposed to go to the start position, however, then wait for his further cue. A lot of the routine went like that. I started when he didn't want me to and waited when he expected me to proceed.

The consensus was that the judging was quite strict and we probably would have passed at a different or local trial. Realistically though, we would have passed if I had done a better routine. Tristan did well, however, and showed his basic obedience and sound temperamet which is the purpose of the BH. His only bobble was on the long down while the other team was on the field. Tristan, of course, thought he should go when he heard their hier but he stopped and went back down so I was proud of him. I thought the other team did well but they didn't pass either.

C'est la vie (I don't know the expression in German). I'm not really too
disappointed since we just decided last Sunday to try for it and that was the first time I did the whole routine. It was great experience for us. I thought Tristan did great and he'll just have to be patient with me.

BH here we come

Finally! On Friday Tristan and I are going to try for his BH. The Pacific Northwest Regional Championships are being held this coming weekend near Spokane so Tristan and I are taking a road trip across the state. We did a trial run at practice on Sunday and were declared ready - with a big caveat. Tristan is a bit iffy when he's supposed to remain in a down position at a distance from me. He kept trying to join the fun when the other team was doing its routine. Since "it's all about Tristan", he's sure their "hier" is his hier. And woe to us if a ball is thrown in the vicinity because it's clearly meant for him. We worked on him staying in the platz and I think he's got it.

It was fun to do the BH routine on Sunday. We haven't really worked on it per se. We'll see if I can count. I'm not used to counting paces and I seem to alternate between counting one for every pair of steps then switching to counting each step. It's a fine recipe for disaster.

The face I see

Isn't this a sweet face? It's the face I see 99% of the time. The other 1% is when I'm making him wear silly hats (or ears) and he makes sure he's giving me a goofy look.

Happy Easter
